Ultimately fromLatinvappa(“flat wine, worthless person”), probably through the intermediate of dialectal Old French, namelyPicardvape,wape,gape(“dull, insipide (of food); weakened (of people); deranged (of the stomach)”), which has possibly, but not necessarily received influence fromProto-Germanic*hwapjaną(“to breathe, air out, let go to waste, become sour”), whereas modernFrenchgouape is a reloan from Spanish.[1] At one point the word meant “rascal, ruffian” and evolved in meaning over time.[2]
