Probably a byform of (now also obsolete)grinnen. Alternatively it has been explained from etymology 3 through a theoretical intermediate “grind one's teeth”, but this seems far-fetched. The development of thed is easily explained from the inflectionsgrin(d)t, grin(d)de, gegrind.
