FromMiddle High Germangān, fromOld High Germangān,gēn, fromProto-West Germanic*gān.

The 2nd and 3rd persons singular of the present have-ee- from northern Old High German-ei-, in keeping with the Proto-Germanic irregular conjugation. The same alternation is found throughoutCentral Franconian as well as inLimburgish andLow German. The infinitive is fromgān, while the other present forms are fromgēn. This latter alternation is confined to westernmostMoselle Franconian.
