FromAncient Greekγένεσις(génesis,“origin”).Coined by English biologistWilliam Bateson in 1905 in a letter to zoologistAdam Sedgwick, and first used publicly by Bateson at a lecture to the International Conference on Plant Hybridization in 1906.
