FromDutchfok, fromMiddle Dutchfocke, further origin unclear.[1] Possibly from the verbvocken(to blow), itself of uncertain origin, perhaps related toFaroesefokka(jib), though this could have been a reverse borrowing. Both of these could be fromProto-Germanic*fuk(k)ōn-(to blow), fromProto-Indo-European*pug-néh₂-.[2]
