Learned borrowing fromAncient Greekἐσωτερικός(esōterikós,belonging to an inner circle), fromἐσωτέρω(esōtérō,further inside), comparative ofἔσω(ésō,within), fromἐς(es),εἰς(eis,into) (the termesoteric referred originally to the secret teachings of Greek philosophers, versus public orexoteric ones).
