FromProto-Finno-Ugric*säppä. Cognates includeFinnishsappi,Estoniansapp andErzyaсэпе(sëpe).[1][2] Its current form is the result ofrebracketing an earlier form*ep possessive-suffixed with-e, comparevese,zúza,ipa, and possiblyapa.[3]
