Attested from the 13th century, fromMiddle Englishdelite, fromOld Frenchdeleiter,deliter, fromLatindēlectāre(to delight, please), frequentative ofdēlicere(to allure, entice), fromdē-(away) +laciō(I lure, I deceive), fromProto-Italic*lakjō(to draw, pull), of unknown ultimate origin.Doublet ofdelect. Related withdelectation,delicate,delicious anddilettante. The modern unetymological spelling (instead of expecteddelite) is influenced bylight and other words ending in-ight, such asmight,bright, etc. The-gh- may also be an attempt to represent the Latin-c-; compare obsoleteindight forindict.
