FromMiddle Dutchdālen, fromOld Dutch*dalon. Equivalent todal(valley) +‎-en. Derived in Old Dutch times, and apparently only shared with Low Saxon. The regular Germanic word isvallen, which has now acquired a more specific sense of “stumble” or “drop uncontrolledly”.
