Etymology

FromMiddle Englishcongregacioun, fromOld Frenchcongregacion, fromLatincongregātiō, itself fromcongregō(to herd into a flock). Adopted (1520s) by the English Bible translatorWilliam Tyndale, to render theAncient Greekἐκκλησία(ekklēsía,those called together, (popular) meeting) (henceLatinecclēsia) in hisNew Testament, and preferred by 16th century Reformers instead ofchurch.
