Inherited fromOld Catalancolde, from pre-literary*coude (with hypercorrection of coda [w] to [ɫ]), fromLatincubitum. Compare the development of Catalanmalalt,delme from originalmalaute,deume (Latinmale habitus,decimus). The subsequent change from /d/ to /(d)z/ may have been by analogy withpolze(thumb).Doublet ofcúbit, a borrowing from Latin.
