FromMiddle Englishcolumne,columpne,columpe, borrowed fromOld Frenchcolumne, fromLatincolumna(“a column, pillar, post”), originally a collateral form ofcolumen, contractionculmen(“a pillar, top, crown, summit”). Akin toLatincollis(“a hill”),celsus(“high”), probably toAncient Greekκολοφών(kolophṓn,“top, summit”).

  1. (architecture) Asolidupright structure designed usually tosupport a larger structure above it, such as aroof or horizontalbeam, but sometimes fordecoration.
  2. Avertical line of entries in atable, usually read fromtop tobottom.
  3. A body oftroops or army vehicles, usually strung out along a road.
  5. A body oftext meant to be readline by line, especially in printed material that has multipleadjacent such on a singlepage.
    It was too hard to read the text across the whole page, so I split it into twocolumns.
  6. A unit ofwidth, especially ofadvertisements, in aperiodical, equivalent to the width of a usual column of text.
