FromMiddle Englishcolumne,columpne,columpe, borrowed fromOld Frenchcolumne, fromLatincolumna(a column, pillar, post), originally a collateral form ofcolumen, contractionculmen(a pillar, top, crown, summit). Akin toLatincollis(a hill),celsus(high), probably toAncient Greekκολοφών(kolophṓn,top, summit).

  1. (architecture) Asolidupright structure designed usually tosupport a larger structure above it, such as aroof or horizontalbeam, but sometimes fordecoration.
  2. Avertical line of entries in atable, usually read fromtop tobottom.
  3. A body oftroops or army vehicles, usually strung out along a road.
  4. A body oftext meant to be readline by line, especially in printed material that has multipleadjacent such on a singlepage.
    It was too hard to read the text across the whole page, so I split it into twocolumns.
  5. A unit ofwidth, especially ofadvertisements, in aperiodical, equivalent to the width of a usual column of text.
    Eachcolumn inch costs $300 a week; this ad is four columns by three inches, so will run $3600 a week.
