Etymology

FromGermanZeiger, more specifically fromMiddle High Germanzeger. First attested in 1470. The second meaning is a relic of old Hungarian criminal law: it refers to the sign hung around the neck of the guilty party tied to the pillar of shame, which showed the person's offense in writing or in a pictorial representation.[1][2][3]
