Ultimately fromOld Englishbrōþor,brōþru(brothers, brethren), influenced byOld Englishbrēþer, dative singular ofbrōþor(brother). Equivalent tobrother +‎-en(plural ending). CompareGermanBrüder(brothers, brethren). More atbrother. The vowel change (fromo toe) is calledumlaut.
