FromMiddle Low Germanbinnen(within), ultimately fromProto-Germanic*bi-(by, at) +*innan <<*in(in). The form is alsoCentral German inMiddle High Germanbinnen (compareLuxembourgishbannen). It is originally an adverb meaning “within, inside” chiefly in local sense, equivalent to Germaninnen.Binnen was adopted in modern standard German as a temporal preposition, while the prefixbinnen- takes on the local sense of the word. Cognate withDutchbinnen.
