Romanian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Probably fromLatinvellere, with a change in conjugation. Traditionally, it was usually thought to be from Slavicbĕliti(to whiten); however, this presents a problem with semantics and there is already another word in Romanian derived from this source, bili, that preserved the original meaning.[1] Compare also Aromanianbilescu.
