Learned borrowing fromMalaybangsa, fromSanskritवंश(vaṃśá,“offspring, lineage, collection”), fromProto-Indo-Iranian*wanćás(“ceiling beam”). Introduced by Eusebio T. Daluz in the early 20th century as counterpart to theSpanishnación(“nation”), as it was deemed that there was no native Tagalog word that adequately expressed the concept, since the nearest counterpart, bayan, had other meanings that deviate from the modern concept of nationhood, as it is also used to refer to atown or amunicipality, similar toSpanishpueblo. However, usage of the word has preceded publications by Eusebio T. Daluz. See alsoMalaywangsa andJavaneseꦮꦁꦱ(wangsa).
