(from a place) The normal word for “from” (when meaning something other than “out of, from the inside of”) isvon. For example:ein Geschenk von meinen Eltern(“a present from my parents”). However,aus is used with words for rooms, dwellings, settlements, and territories, such asHaus(“house”),Garten(“garden”),Dorf(“village”),Land(“country”), etc., and also with geographical names that refer to such places. An exception to this rule is thatvon is used when both an origin and a destination are given. Individual words may also behave irregularly; so one saysvon einem Bauernhof(“from a farm”).
