The conjugation suggests this is a denominal verb in-ō, -āre built on some unattested noun or adjective derived fromante-(“before, in front of”) + the verbcapiō(“take”),[1] e.g.*anticeps; comparemancipō(“to transfer or sell”) frommanceps(“purchaser, renter; owner”) andparticipō(“to partake of, share, participate”) fromparticeps(“sharing, partaking”). Alternatively, it may have been formed directly on the analogy of the preceding verbs without*anticeps ever existing as a precursor.[2]
Compare typologically Russianпредвосхити́ть(predvosxitítʹ) (<+-хи́тить(-xítitʹ), akin toхвата́ть(xvatátʹ)).
