Etymology

FromLate Latinanalphabetus(unable to read and write; illiterate), fromAncient Greekἀναλφάβητος(analphábētos,illiterate), fromἀν-(an-,un-) +ἀλφάβητος(alphábētos,alphabet); analysable asan- +‎alphabet. The English word was probably influenced by cognate words in other languages such asFrenchanalphabète(adjective),GermanAnalphabetus,Analphabet(nouns),analphabeten(adjective),Italiananalfabeta(adjective, noun),analfabeto(adjective, noun),Portugueseanalfabeto(adjective, noun),Spanishanalfabeto(adjective, noun).[1]

The adjective was derived from the noun.[1]
