Inherited fromMiddle Englishamen, fromOld Englishāmen, fromEcclesiastical Latināmēn, fromAncient Greekἀμήν(amḗn), fromBiblical Hebrewאָמֵן(ʾāmēn,certainly, verily) (cognate withArabicآمِينَ(ʔāmīna),Classical Syriacܐܡܝܢ(ʾāmên)). In Old English, it was used only at the end of the Gospels. Elsewhere, it was translated assōþlīċe!(truly”, “indeed!),swāhitis(so it is), andsīe!([so] be it!).
