Etymology

[edit]

From*aineh, related toKarelianaineh andEstonianaine (loan from Finnish), probably borrowed fromProto-Norse[Term?], fromProto-Germanic*afniz (compareSwedishämne(matter, subject)). The correspondence of Germanic *f with Finnishi may seem exceptional,[1] but has a parallel ineine. The sense "essay" wascoined by Finnish folklorist and linguistDaniel Europaeus in 1853 (asainekirjoitus).
