FromMiddle Englishadjectif,adjective, fromOld Frenchadjectif, fromLatinadiectivus, fromadiciō +-īvus, fromad-(to, towards, at) +iaciō(throw). The Latin wordadiectivus in turn was a calque ofAncient Greekἐπιθετικόν(epithetikón,added), a derivative of the compound verbἐπιτίθημι(epitíthēmi), from which also comesepithet.
