    FromProto-Italic*akris, fromProto-Indo-European*h₂eḱrós(sharp). The change fromo-stem toi-stem declension is irregular and not fully explained. Likewise, Latin has irregular lengthening of the vowel. Cognate withAncient Greekἄκρος(ákros).[1]
