From lateMiddle Englishabolisshen, fromMiddle Frenchaboliss-, extended stem ofabolir,[1] fromLatinabolēre(to retard, check the growth of, (and by extension) destroy, abolish), and inchoativeabolēscere(to wither, vanish, cease).[2]
