Etymology

Coined in 1860-70 (author undetermined) fromabi(both) +‎-nieks, following the model ofAncient Greekἀμφίβιον(amphíbion), fromἀμφί(amphí,of both kinds) andβίος(bíos,life). This word quickly replaced earlier proposed forms likeabejāds andabejādnieks.[1]

In the biological sense (Amphibia),abinieks is the usual term. In non-biological senses ('amphibian tank'), however, onlyamfībija is possible.
