Coined in 1860-70 (author undetermined) fromabi(“both”) +-nieks, following the model ofAncient Greekἀμφίβιον(amphíbion), fromἀμφί(amphí,“of both kinds”) andβίος(bíos,“life”). This word quickly replaced earlier proposed forms likeabejāds andabejādnieks.[1]
