FromRussianузбек(uzbek), fromUzbekoʻzbek. Further etymology is uncertain; possibly fromTurkicöz(genuine) +Sogdian[script needed](βγ/⁠beġ⁠/,master); the latter fromProto-Indo-Aryan*bʰagás, fromProto-Indo-Iranian*bʰagás. The first element is often thought to be equivalent toEnglishOghuz.
