    Appendix:Sundanese borrowing spelling conventions

    [edit]

This appendix details the spelling considerations for foreign loanwords Sundanese according to thePalanggeran Éjahan Basa Sunda (Sundanese Spelling Convention), as discussed in the 1998Kongres Bahasa Sunda (Sundanese Language Congress). For comparison, the Sundanese standard orthography leans closely to theIndonesian spelling rules according to the EYD, with some slight differences.

    Overview

    [edit]

In the development of the Sundanese language, various language elements have been borrowed, both from other regional languages (mainly Javanese), Malay/Indonesian, Sanskrit, Arabic, Portuguese, Dutch, English, and other languages. Based on the stage of integration, the elements of borrowing in the Sundanese language can be divided into two large groups, adapted and unadapted borrowing.

    • Unadapted borrowing by definition is a loanword that has not been conformed to the morpho-syntactic, phonological and/or phonotactical rules of the target language. In this case, the words are still recognizably foreign, having non-native spelling or unusual pronunciation (e.g.,upgrading,shuttlecock, etc.).
    • Adapted borrowing orstandard borrowing are loanwords that have become completely assimilated into the language. In this case, it is recommended that foreign spellings are only changed as necessary so that the Sundanese words can still be compared with the original words while still conforming to the Sundanese phonology.
