Shortening ofBa Tàu. Seetàu. The wordtàu(“boat”) was first used to refer to Ming Chinese refugees who fled to Vietnam by boat when the Qing Dynasty took over China. The remnants of Ming Chinese refugees are nowadays known as theMinh Hương people.

This term andngười Tàu in particular may be considered derogatory in contemporary usage, with more polite terms includingngười Hoa orngười Trung. However, historically, it was not considered derogatory.tàu, lowercased, is used in a variety of common nouns that are not considered derogatory either.
