Etymology

[edit]

Alteration of earliermew, fromMiddle Englishmewen, mouwen(to mew, meow), ofonomatopoeic origin.

CompareSaterland Frisianmauje, miauje(to meow),West Frisianmiaukje(to meow),Dutchmiauwen(to meow),Middle Low Germanmauwen, mawen, mouwen(to meow) (whence modernGerman Low Germanmauen, miauen(to meow)),Middle High Germanmouen, modernGermanmiauen(to meow). Some spellings were modelled onFrenchmiaou.

Meow and its spelling variants entered widespread currency in the 19th century, mostly replacingmew, possibly becausephonetic change meant that word had ceased to approximate a cat's cry (contrast the pronunciation of Middle Englishmewen/ˈmɛu̯ən/ compared to modern/ˈmjuː/).
