FromMiddle Englishdiaria, fromMiddle Frenchdiarrie (Frenchdiarrhée),[1] fromLate Latindiarrhoea, fromAncient Greekδιάρροια(diárrhoia,through-flowing), fromδιά(diá,through) +ῥέω(rhéō,flow). Bysurface analysis,dia- +‎-rrhea. Spelling later altered to resemble the word's Latin and Greek roots.
