Etymology

FromPickadilly Hall, a house belonging to a tailor who specialized in a type of lace collar called apiccadill, possibly from conjecturedSpanish *picadillo, frompicado(punctured, pierced); compare 17th century Spanishpicadura(a similar lace collar).

Piccadilly attested from 1743; previously the area was calledPortugal, and the streetPortugal Street (1692), afterCatherine of Braganza.
