FromMiddle EnglishPalestyne, fromOld EnglishPalestina, fromLatinPalaestīna(“Roman province of Palestine”), fromAncient GreekΠαλαιστίνη(Palaistínē,“Philistia and the surrounding region”), fromHebrewפְּלֶשֶׁת(p'léshet,“Philistia, land of thePhilistines”).[1][2] The termP-l-s-t orP-r-s-t, found in five AncientEgyptian inscriptions (beginning with one atMedinet Habu from circa 1170BCE and ending withPadiiset's Statue inscription from circa 900-850BCE) as the name of a people near Egypt, is traditionally taken to be cognate.[3][4] Seven Assyrian inscriptions contain the word "Palas(h)tu" or "Pilistu", which is usually also taken to be cognate.[5][6]
