Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed, initially into British English, fromBurmeseမြန်မာ(mranma), the formal Burmese name of the main ethnic group in Myanmar;ဗမာ(ba.ma), from whichBurma is derived, is the informal name. Both Burmese terms are also adjectives meaning "Burmese" (related to Myanmar/Burma, its, people, language, etc). Like in the wordBurma, ther was not originally pronounced (and is not present in the Burmese term), it is a vowel-lengthening device used by non-rhotic (British) dialects; comparegorm.
