Ultimately fromAncient GreekΜόνοικος(Mónoikos), which is of unknown (possiblyLigurian) origin. The name was associated at an early date with Hercules, who had a temple here, and was said to mean “he who dwells alone”; seeμόνος(mónos) andοἰκέω(oikéō).[1]
