[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Of unclear origin. The suffix-ova is probably ofSlavic origin. Theories about the first element:

  • It is possibly ultimately fromGothic𐌼𐌿𐌻𐌳𐌰(mulda, dust, mud) (possiblyMoldavia); compare the riverMulde in Germany andMoldau, the German name of the riverVltava, which may be of related origin.
  • Alternatively, it may be related toRomanianmolid(spruce), though the loss of thei in this word is difficult to explain.
  • A folk etymology, according toDimitrie Cantemir, says the name of theMoldova River comes from PrinceDragoș, after his houndMolda, who drowned in it while attempting to hunt an aurochs.
  • The Romanian people may have called themselves "Moldoveni" or "Munteni" (literally "of the mountains") so Moldova may alternatively derive from aThracian-Illyrian language, from*mol(mountain) +*dava(town).[1]
