FromMedieval LatinLīthuānia f, fromProto-Slavic*Litъva f, fromOld LithuanianLietuva f; compare the Early Modern synonymLettow (fromMiddle EnglishLettowe).

It has been speculated that the name comes from the rivuletLietauka,[1] although archeological evidence does not corroborate this hypothesis.
