Etymology 1

An early romanization of theMandarin /(Hàn), later reinforced byWade-Giles andpinyin. Originallya river within present-dayShaanxi andHubei. As a Chinese dynasty, from the founderLiu Bang's short-lived realm inSichuan andShaanxi among China'sEighteen Kingdoms, named for theQinEmpire'sHanzhongCommandery, headquartered in a city which also became known asHanzhong, named for its placement along the middle reaches of the river.

The usage for the Chinese ethnicity first appeared during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, claiming the Han dynasty as one of the golden ages of Chinese history.
