Etymology

FromSpanishflorida(flowery), often referring to a place's abundance of flowers. The state's name specifically is a shortening ofla Florida(the flowery one) orPascua Florida(flowery Easter).[1] It is the oldest surviving European-given place-name in the US.[2][1] The village inOrange County,New York was named in the 1760s fromLatinflōrida(flowery).[3]
