Old Norse-stem nouns.

These nouns are feminine, typically with the following endings:

  • in the nominative singular: the bare stem;
  • in the genitive singular:-jar;
  • in the nominative plural:-jar.

The stem classes are named from the perspective ofProto-Germanic and may not still be visible in Old Norse inflections. This class derives from Proto-Germanicō-stems ending inj after a light root, a vowel or a velar. As a result, the stem hasi-umlaut throughout.
