This is a non-definitive list of English verbs commonly used for reporting spoken statements, questions, etc.
- "I am a Frenchman" =Hesaid he was a Frenchman. Wheresay is a reporting verb.
- "Where is the station?" =Heasked where the station was. Whereask is a reporting verb.
- Other types of reporting verbs give information about how the words were spoken, or the emotions transmitted.
- "Help me!" shecried.
- "Leave me alone", hegrowled.
- "It's so nice to see you again", shelaughed.
- "I'm not sure all these examples are valid," heoffered.
- Still other types of reporting verbs are used to completely rephrase rather than restating.
- "Get out, now!" =We wereordered to leave.
- "Please take a seat." =Heinvited me to sit down.
