Ultimately fromLatinCarantania. Possibly ofCeltic origin; compareProto-Celtic*karants(friend). The Latin toponym was also borrowed intoSlavic asProto-Slavic*korǫtanъ (with an adjective*korǫtьskъ); compareCzechKorutany andSloveneKoroška(Carinthia).
