Bahia
|

Shortened fromBahia de Todos os Santos(“Bay of All Saints”), after a bay on the state’s coast. In turn, bahia is an archaic spelling ofbaía(“bay”).
The name of the state was specially mentioned as an exception in the Brazilian Orthographic Form of 1943, which otherwise removed⟨h⟩ within words. Notably, derived terms such asbaiano (previouslybahiano) did not receive this treatment.
Although theOrthographic Agreement of 1990 does not similarly present any exceptions, this spelling is still officially adopted in Brazil and listed in theBrazilian Academy of Letters’ Orthographic Vocabulary (VOLP).
