This appendix explains characters written in theLatin script.

The term Roman script or Roman alphabet is the term used in United Kingdom for what is known in the United States as the Latin script or Latin alphabet.

Not to be confused with aroman font in typography (which remains uncapitalized), having ordinary upright letterforms, in contrast to more cursive, sloped italic fonts.

Letters

TheISO basic Latin alphabet is composed of 26 uppercaseletters (ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ) and 26 lowercase versions of the same letters (abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz), resulting in the following pairs:

Varieties of letters

Two or more letters may be joined in single glyphs, formingligatures. (ex.: the lettersa ande joined together formæ) Finally,diacritics may be added to letters or ligatures. (for example, an acute accent may be added to the lettero, formingó)

Punctuation

The Latin script includes a variety of punctuation marks.

In multiple languages, it is possible to use some letters of the Latin script as numbers. These letters are known asRoman numerals.
