Borrowed fromAncient GreekἈλᾱνός(Alānós),Ἀλᾱνοί(Alānoí). Perhaps renewed inLate Latin, especially in Spain in the meaning "dog breed", as aMigration PeriodWanderwort, e.g. viaGothic*𐌰𐌻𐌰𐌽𐍃(*alans).[1]

Unclear origin. Perhaps Latinization of aCeltic name such asOld BretonAlan, belonging to several Breton saints and borrowed as EnglishAlan andFrenchAlain. This could be connected withIrishail(noble), or else has been borrowed by Breton from the word underEtymology 1.[2]
