Aachen
|
FromMiddle High GermanĀchen, fromOld High GermanĀhha, from aProto-West Germanic*Ākā (cf.Middle DutchÂken), fromLatinaqua(“water”), referring to thelocal thermal springs (which are known to have been exploited by the Romans, though their original name is not quite clear).[1]
A derivation from cognate Old High Germanah(h)a(“flowing water”), fromProto-Germanic*ahwō, as claimed by Manfred Niemeyer’sDeutsches Ortsnamenbuch,[2] is impossible; firstly, because of the old-long/aː/, to which, besides the Standard German form itself, localRipuarianOche andLimburgishAoke clearly attest, and secondly, because of the/k/ inLow Franconian. (On page 23, theOrtsnamenbuch indeed admits that the/x/ inAachen is due to theHigh German consonant shift, thereby contradicting itself in a most obvious way.)
Aachen n (proper noun,genitiveAachensor(optionally with an article)Aachen)

Borrowed fromGermanAachen(“Aachen”).
