FromProto-Baltic*-umas, possibly from an earlier suffix*-ma(s) added to au-stem (e.g.,Lithuaniansaugùs(safe, sure),saugù-mas), from which theu was reinterpreted as part of the suffix and then extended to other stems. Cognate withLithuanian-umas.[1]
