Representing the human mouth. In careful depictions, there is a significant narrowing toward the corners, so that the lips recurve, and the upper lip is more curved than the lower. This glyph was conventionally colored red. Compare the Chinese character. The phonetic value ofr is derived by the rebus principle from its use as the logogram forr(ꜣ)(mouth).
