Ideogrammic compound (會意 /会意) andphono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声,OC*luɡ): phonetic (cauldron) + semantic (rice) — congee. is a cauldron with three hollow legs, in which (“rice”) is cooked. The two depict the steam emitted from the congee in the cauldron.

(“congee”) is the reduced form of the character. has since been phonetically borrowed from𧶠 (OC*luɡ) to mean "to sell".
