Originally, ideogrammic compound (會意 /会意): a person near the water's edge, extended to mean "on the verge". The water component was removed to distinguish its usage for "frequent".

Etymology 1

Perhaps from aProto-Sino-Tibetan*phi-r/n/s(late, behind, after, outside) (STEDT root #5883). See (OC*piʔ, *pis, *bi, *bis, *biɡ, “to compare, match, follow”) for more cognates.
